The University of Dayton offers the Intensive English Program for five seven-week terms and one three-week Summer Intersession term. For start dates, see our academic calendar. How many hours a day are the classes? Classes begin at 9:00 am and continue to 3:00 pm on Monday through Thursday and 9:00 am until 12:00 pm on Friday. There are a total of 23 hours of class per week. What classes are available? Classes are offered every semester in grammar, reading and writing, and listening and speaking. Each term there are special courses offered which may include TOEFL preparation, pronunciation, writing labs and vocabulary development. For class times, see our class schedule. How many levels of each class are offered? Grammar — up to five levels Reading/Writing — up to five levels Listening/Speaking — up to three levels How big are the classes? The average class size is ten students per class. There are no more than sixteen students in a class. How can I know which level I'll enter for each class? All students take an English placement test when they arrive for orientation to determine which class level is appropriate. Can I change levels if the class is too easy? Yes. Each student has one week to change the level of their classes. Students must write a letter to the Academic Coordinator requesting a level change and indicating why they should advance. The teachers will meet the first Friday of classes and make a decision. How do I move to the next level? The student needs to pass all classes in order to continue to the next level. This means achieving a final score of at least 74% in order to pass to the next level. Does the University provide books? How much are books? Students are responsible for purchasing their own books which are available at the on-campus University bookstore. Books usually cost about $150 per term. TOEFL preparation back to top Do you have TOEFL preparation classes? Yes. We often offer TOEFL preparation classes for students in the higher levels of the Intensive English Program. Can I take the TOEFL at the University of Dayton? Yes. The Institutional TOEFL is offered once a term and costs $30. The new Internet-based TOEFL is also offered at the University of Dayton. A student's ability to pass the TOEFL depends on how quickly they are able to grasp the English language. Taking academic classes at the University back to top If I complete the University's Intensive English Program, can I enter the University's academic programs without a TOEFL score? Yes. Undergraduate students must achieve a minimum TOEFL score of 523 on the paper-based (PB) test, 193 on the computer-based (CB) test or 70 on the Internet-based (iB) test in order to begin taking academic courses at the University of Dayton OR successfully complete the Intensive English Program. Graduate students must achieve a TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test), 213 (computer-based test), or 80 (Internet-based test) OR successfully pass the Intensive English Program in order to begin taking academic courses. Can I take academic courses at the University of Dayton while I am in the Intensive English Program? Yes, if you are in level five of the grammar class or the reading and writing class you may be able to take academic courses. Students taking courses in an academic program may take a maximum of seven credits (two classes). Do you have computers? Private computer labs are set aside for the Intensive English Program students daily at 8:30-9:00 am, 11:40-1:00 pm and 2:50-4:30 pm. Students may also use the University's Language Learning Center located in the Humanities Building. How many teachers are there in the Intensive English Program? There are four permanent teachers for the Intensive English Program. Additional teachers are available depending on the term. For information about our full-time teachers, visit our faculty page. Other questions back to top What activites are planned for fun? Field trips, guest speakers, birthday parties and other events are planned throughout the term for the students. Most activities take place during the afternoon rather than weekends or evenings. Students are required to participate as part of the program when the activities take place during class time. For this term's activities, see our activities page. How can I meet Americans? Students have the opportunity to meet Americans on a daily basis on the University campus. Students residing in one of the International Learning and Living Communities on campus will live, study and socialize with American and other international students regularly! Students participating in the conversation partners program or living with a host family will certainly find themselves immersed in the American culture. What housing options are available? Students may live on-campus in the International Learning and Living Community or other on-campus housing. After one term on campus, students may choose to live with a host family. Students may also choose to live in an off-campus apartment at any time. See our housing page for more information. Do I need a car? The city of Dayton has a public transportation system which uses buses. Many of the host families are located near a bus route. Can I work on campus? Students on an F-1 or J-1 visa may work on campus after successfully completing one term in the Intensive English Program. Students can work a maximum of 20 hours per week. |
